Spreading the Love
Today is Valentine's Day. In our home, this doesn't mean too much. We like to think that we do a pretty decent job of sharing our love on a consist basis. The children are at an age where Valentine's Day is full of fun and candy and cheesy well-known characters. It's a ton of fun to watch them experience the things we take for granted with so much awe and grandeur.
I mean it's all HEARTS! CANDY! VALENTINES! For the past week or so, I have been saying to them: "Will you be my Valentine?" Initially they thought I was a bit off my rocker (and, really, who doesn't think that about me?), but this morning Aselya said to me: "Mom, will you be my Valentine?" I told her "no" and proceeded with my day.
You know I did not do that. Instead, I beamed with pride, hugged her and said: "Of course I'll be your Valentine! Will you be mine?"
We gave them little gifts. They were overjoyed and I knew they would be. They each received a My Little Pony (or unicorn). You would have thought the clouds parted for just a moment when they saw that they had their very own friend to cuddle, love, and groom.
I love knowing the kids so well. I love knowing that I can spend $5 on them and make their lives that much fuller for months. I love that they do not yet know that their mom is a big dork and that saying the things she says can only lead them to their own dorkiness. My speech patterns, musical tastes, and talk show host preference are also theirs.
~ ellen degeneres is a common name in our home. I really think that my kids think we are real and true friends with her. If only...
~ When we are not listening to Raffi or some other kid's CD in the van, they want to hear the "Girls." That is, the Indigo Girls. They are particularly fond of the "coffee song" right now. Though they can't quite figure out why it is that I turn down the volume at different times in the song. They get annoyed at me every time. The best part is that I am often asked to turn it up loud so that they can sing along and they sing various parts of the songs. I adore it.
~ I often hear things I say to them coming out of their mouths. At the dinner table the other day, Aselya says to me, "Mom, you crack me up." I couldn't help but laugh. I tell them that all the time because they do. They crack me up. How could they not? And then today as I was walked into the room they were playing in, Adiana looked up at me and asked "What's up, mom?" I just smiled and responded with, "not much."
Just wait until they realize it is not hip to be like your mom. I am going to savor this time so that when they are twelve and dodging my presence so their friends don't know that they are with me, I can remind them that once upon a time THEY TOTALLY WANTED TO BE ME! |
