Developmental Differences

There really aren't that many things I notice that are incredibly different developmentally between Aselya and Adiana.  They seem to be at about the same place academically.  They definitely already have their strengths and weaknesses, but I wouldn't label one as smarter than the other.

While playing last night, Aselya would stand on Adiana's back and jump off.  Every little body in the room giggled about it, and I was terrified.  Adiana is at least 10 pounds lighter than Aselya and I feared for her little body.  I voiced my concern and Joel tried to get the girls to switch it up.

Joel: "Okay, Aselya how about you go down and let Adiana jump off of you?"

Aselya: "No, I don't want to."

Adiana: "I don't want to either."

Joel: "Why not?"

Adiana: "Because that hurts me and I don't want to stand on Aselya's back and hurt her."

And that, my friends, is the difference between a four-year-old and a three-year-old.  A four-year-old is developmentally able to place themselves into somebody else's position while the three-year-old has not yet fully developed this ability.  While Aselya is only days (DAYS!) away from her 4th birthday, she seems to not yet have acquired this ability.

My dear husband (aka sponge extraordinaire) picked up this fact from watching an episode of Nova.  The same episode talked about the human ability to mimic and pass knowledge on from generation to generation.  I didn't actually watch the episode, but it does sound intriguing.  I will probably just continue to allow my husband to learn all the information and pass it on to me (after all, it's human nature).  That way I can continue to spend my time playing Scrabulous and blogging.  Nice plan, wouldn't you say?
